In recent discussions of Canto 8 of Dante’s Inferno, many scholars have argued about Dante the pilgrim’s controversial abuse of one of the wrathful sinners of the fifth circle, Filippo Argenti. The altercation between the two is viewed in numerous lights. From one perspective it is seen as unjustified (ira mala) because Dante is seen as guilty of the sin being punished for in this circle, but also because his response was wrongly motivated. Others state that Dante’s anger was righteous (ira bona) because there was proper reasoning behind it. Kleinhenz, one particular scholar, argues that Dante’s outburst at Filippo Argenti is a result of the praise Dante received after initially criticizing the sinner. In his book, Inferno 8: The†¦show more content†¦My opinion, however, is that Dante’s outburst was both ira mala and ira bona. Dante’s treatment of Argenti was motivated by many different factors and therefore the force that compelled Dante to act in the way that he did can not be classified solely as righteous or indignant. Dante’s obsession with Virgil is evident in the nicknames that Dante uses –leader, lord, master, sweet father and teacher to name a few. Dante’s idolization of Virgil the poet causes him to act out in order to please his guide. For example, when Dante first recognizes Argenti as the sinner in the mud he cries out to him, â€Å"With weeping and mourning cursed spirit, now remain; for I recognize you, though you are filthy all over,† (Inf. 8.33-35). In this passage, Dante is not verbally abusing Argenti rather he is simply telling the sinner to remain where he is in order to prevent Argenti from reaching over the boat. The Indian chief with his couple hundred followers decided to resist against the Americans and tried going back to where they started from, with the purpose of settling there (Jane 4). Since then, I have reread the novel at least twice a year. There are many features of the novel that has touched me in a profound way. However, there is one aspect that distinguishes this book as my absolute favorite and as the novel that enthuses me: its description of courage. The honorable feature that the novel contains that most inspires me is its truly unique portrayal of courage. The main character, a lawyer named Atticus Finch, states that, â€Å"[Real courage is] when you know youre licked before you begin but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what. You rarely win, but sometimes you do.† In other words, true courage is trying to do what is right even if you know you are most likely going to lose. Indeed, Atticus does just that. In a town located in the Deep South during the 1930s that is highly prejudiced against African Americans, Atticus defends an innocent black man accused of rape by a white man and his daughter. In the months leading up to the trial, Atticus and his family, specifically his children, experience resentment from the townspeople. Atticus himself realizes that, â€Å"[he] won’t win.† Despite this, Atticus presses on, but ultimately, he loses the case. Inspiringly, even though Atticus knew he would not win the case, he tried anyway because he knew it was the right thing to do. Angels in America Movie Reviews

‘Angels in America’ a play that has become a success story in the mainstream drama in America acts. The play’s setting is both political and religious in nature as it was down played in the backdrop of politics in 1980s that was characterized by religious believes that defined the American culture. Gay – a disparate group were made to lead the plays (Kushner, 1992). This group of people is however a serious threat of contracting Aids forcing them to straight- face the specter through teaching themselves on better ways to support themselves. The play is divided into two part with ‘Millennium Approaches’ being the first part mainly devoted introductory part of the plot and partly give the main features and situations that are personal to each character. The other part is ‘perestroika’ the most critical part of the play presenting the major themes of the play (Kushner, 1992). There several aspects of that Kushner used in his productions that puzzles may admires of his work. As the play subtitle ‘A Gay Fantasia on National Themes’ suggests Kushner uses fantasia a musical work used in theatre. The composer of the play allows his or her imaginations free play with one idea flowing from another.   These ideas are musical in nature and put less consideration to the set forms. In the play Kushner allows the scenes to overlap and sometimes even in a manner that is contrapuntal (Borreca, 1998). According to (Borreca, 1998) the characters move in and out of dialogues that are being played simultaneously rapidly changing the settings from houses to offices, from an imagined Antarctica to a hospital, Brooklyn or Central park. This aspect adds to the love for this play as its qualities are enigmatic and so fascinating in nature. As Kushner puts it the fantastical element serves a Brechtian purpose of self-awareness breaking up the realist action in order to defamiliarize it (Brask, 1995). The aspect is however too simplistic for an issue so important and central to the play like political and historical realism. Kushner managed to blend both political realism and the American history with ‘gay fantasia’ involving the angels, hallucinations and dreams. This aspect can be evident in ‘Millennium Approaches’ three and two when prior gets examined by the nurse-Emily but before that is done a flaming tome rises from the floor. In this way Kushner employs the art of stage craft and storytelling that goes beyond the naturalistic and realistic conventions of a play that is well-made that desire greatly influenced the fantastical writing (Borreca, 1998). Kushner however wants to charm his audience through pure theatrical spectacle of an angel descending upon the stage making it attractive (Fisher, 2002).
